ACT Science Tips Are you concerned about ACT Science? Even if you are not strong in the scientific areas assessed biology, chemistry, Earth/space sciences, and physics you can still perform well on this section. The ACT primarily measures your ability to reason scientifically, not your recall of concepts. Here are several tips for the Science section: 1. Write on the exam The majority of questions involve reading lengthy passages or viewpoints, and the involved information can be dense. Underline or circle key terms that are frequently utilized, and mark key points. Writing on the test has two purposes: it keeps your mind active while you read the passages, and it highlights important parts that you can reference when you address the questions. Here are some great tips on how to prep for the ACT science section. 2. Eliminate With more difficult questions, it is often simpler to identify the wrong answers than to choose the correct ones. Eliminate responses you know are incorrect, and probability will be in your favor even if you must guess between the remaining choices. If an answer seems correct, mark it but read the other options you may locate an even better response. 3. Summarize This strategy is very useful with Conflicting Viewpoints questions: separate views about the same subject are provided, and seven questions test your ability to evaluate the argument and differentiate opinions. After reading, summarize as quickly and accurately as possible the main argument of each viewpoint. Note where the authors disagree, but also where they agree. When answering questions, refer to your summaries first, and then consult the original passages if the answer isnt apparent. 4. Translate the question The ACT measures your ability to interpret complex or confusing questions. A wrong answer will frequently appear appealing because of a difficult question. Do not permit a strange question to phase you. Instead, translate the question into your own words, and use it to determine the correct choice. 5. Ignore the answers, briefly Not only are questions complex, but the answers on the ACT are intentionally constructed to mislead you. It can be beneficial to initially cover up the multiple-choice answers and attempt to respond to the question in your own words then, with the answer choices revealed, choose the one that most closely matches your own response. This method works best with general questions on the Research Summaries and Conflicting Viewpoint sections problems that ask about the general purpose or main idea of a passage. 6. Skim charts and graphs Part of the ACT Science section, Data Representation, assesses your ability to read and interpret scientific charts and graphs. Spend several seconds examining the chart, noting the important parts the title, subtitle, and units then move on to the questions. You likely will not have to answer questions about every part of the chart or graph, and you will certainly have to refer back to them regardless. What are Geometric Shapes A geometric shape is formed by joining various line segments together and the study of these geometric shapes comes under the section of Geometry in Mathematics. When a geometric shape is formed, it consists of different measurements such as the side length, angle measure, area, perimeter etc. These measurements are very helpful in analyzing the given geometric structure accordingly. There are 2-dimensional geometric shapes such as square, rectangle, triangle etc. and 3-dimensional shapes such as cube, sphere, cylinder, pyramid, prism etc. Example 1: Calculate the area of a triangle which has base side of length 6 cm and height of 9 cm? Triangle is a geometric shape which has 3 sides. The area of the triangle is = 1/2 *(base)* (height) Given: Base length of the triangle, b = 6cm Height of the triangle, h = 9cm This gives, Area of the triangle, A = 1 /2 * 6 cm * 9 cm = 27 cm2. Therefore, area of the given triangle is 27 cm2 Example 2: Calculate the area and perimeter of the rectangle with dimensions 4m and 3m? Rectangle is geometric shape with 4 sides. The given rectangle has dimensions 4m and 3m respectively. Given: Length, l = 4m; Width, w = 3m. Area of rectangle = length * width The area of rectangle is = 4m * 3m = 12m2. The perimeter of the rectangle = 2(length + width) The perimeter of the rectangle = 2(4 + 3) = 2 * 7 = 14m. Hence, area = 12m2 and perimeter = 14m.

In a trapezoid, there is one pair of parallel sides and one pair of non-parallel sides. A trapezoid is also known as trapezium in certain countries. The area of a trapezoid can be calculated by first finding the sum of the lengths of the parallel sides and then multiplying this by half the height of the trapezoid. Using this formula, the area of any trapezoid can be easily calculated. Setting Your Child Up for Success When they need an Assessment In my last post I discussed talking to your child about ADHD in a way that is supportive and helpful. But what happens when your child needs an assessment for academic challenges or ADHD symptoms? Many parents worry that their child will find the evaluation process intimidating, or wonder if their child will think they are being tested because there is something wrong with them. Other parents have concerns about how their overly active, distractible, or anxious child will tolerate the testing especially if their child struggles to stay on task under normal circumstances. The good news is that the psychologists and educators who conduct these assessments have a great deal of experience working with kids who have academic and attention problems. They typically love working with kids like yours! The positive one-on-one attention that your child receives during the evaluation process will help make it go smoothly and maybe even be fun for your child! And as a parent there are some thin gs that you can do to set your child up for assessment success: Work with a professional who you like and respect. If you respect and enjoy the psychologist or educator who is conducting the evaluation, then theres a good chance that you child will too! Kids and adolescents pick up on social cues from their parents, and if you seem to be at ease with the process your child will feel much more relaxed themselves. Discuss your concerns with the professional. Share your concerns with the professional who is conducting the evaluation. Ask them what types of strategies they use to help kids like yours have a positive evaluation experience. If you have suggestions for what might help your child, let the professional know. They might be able to use some of these same strategies during their testing sessions. Create positive expectations for your child. Have your child start off on the right foot by letting them know that youve met with the doctor (or educator), and you really enjoyed meeting with them. Tell your child that you think theyll like the doctor/educator too, and that you think theyll have fun during the appointments. Focus on learning styles. When talking to your child about the evaluation it can be very helpful to describe it as a process that will help you and your child figure out how they learn best. Let them know that everyone learns differently. For example, some kids learn best by watching a demonstration of how something is done, other kids learn best by reading about things, while others learn best in a hands-on way by doing things. In addition, let your child know that it will help everyone understand which subjects are harder and easier for your child, and how they can help your child be successful in the areas that are more challenging. Even resistant kids can enjoy the process. If you have a child who is resistant to going to an evaluation appointment, try not to worry too much. Just because your child might not want to go doesnt mean that theyll have a bad experience once theyre there. Ive had plenty of kids and teens come into my office feeling reluctant or even upset about having to attend the appointment (especially when its on a Saturday). But once things get started and we get to know each other, the kids settle in and forget that they didnt want to come in the first place. Usually they are even happy to come back for a follow-up appointment. After all, its not often that kids get so much uninterrupted time from an adult who is so interested in what they have to say! Assessments can be powerful tools for learning about your childs strengths and weaknesses, and the things you can do to help them succeed academically. Proactive and positive communication before and after the assessment are key to helping your child feel comfortable so you can both get the most out of the evaluation process. ABOUT DR.
